PublicationA Real Game-Changer in ESL Classroom? Boosting Vietnamese Learner Engagement with Gamification( 2020)Lê Thùy LinhThe significance of gamification has been robust in educational contexts as gamification provides a greater engagement and empowerment among ESL language learners. This research aims to reconsider the role of gamification beyond its conventional use as gamified classroom activities, incorporating it into the whole journey of an ESL blended learning course. The study was conducted in a Vietnamese private university with a total of 50 learners for 12 weeks. E-journal and interviews were employed to explore learners’ deep thoughts of gamification. Each week, five learners voluntarily submitted their journals through a link by Google Form. Additionally, interviews were also conducted in the middle of the course, week 7, and at the end of the course, week 12. Data was analyzed into 3 main themes: behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement. The result indicated that ESL learners achieved a deeper engagement in a gamified blended classroom, behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively. To be more specific, learners attained a higher level of participation, effort-making, and contribution to learning. Moreover, participants showed their interest and confirmed the decrease of language anxiety. Finally, students developed a sense of social connection and investment in their learning, which was regarded as the expressions of cognitive engagement.

PublicationValidating a Scale for Measuring Students' Perspectives toward Global Citizenship: A Case at a Private University in Vietnam( 2021)Minh Thanh NguyenGlobalization is one of the most significant phenomena of the 21st century, affecting many aspects of human society. In the wave of this influence, higher education institutions in many countries have adjusted themselves in order to prepare their students to be global citizens. However, research shows a need to evaluate whether the integration of global citizenship education is effective among different institutions and contexts. Many scholars are in favor of measuring students' perspectives as a solution. Additionally, although many organizations, such as UNESCO, and other researchers have investigated this issue, the measurement model is mainly designed for large-scale research. Therefore, this study aimed to validate a scale for measuring student perspectives toward global citizenship in a particular context of a university. Notably, the adopted scale measures global citizenship perspectives via three components: social responsibility, global competence, and global civic activism. In the study, each component was measured separately via three smaller measurement models. All the models were validated by using the PLS-SEM approach. The data for validating were collected from 171 students at a private university in Vietnam through an online survey. The result of data analysis suggested that the original scale (which was designed for the context of developed countries) could be employed in the context of developing countries. Nevertheless, some adjustments should be made in term of social responsibility and global competence.

PublicationLocative Prepositions “at, in, on” and Translation to Vietnamese Through Frameworks( 2021)THI TUYET HANH NGUYENBased on the role of the frame of reference under the influence of point-of-view culture in the British and Vietnamese ethnic groups used as a cognitive premise in the translation, the article presents the justification of the contracting process about the reasons, similarities and differences as well as the semantic differences of the locating preposition “at, in, on” in English with the corresponding linguistic units in Vietnamese through specific communication contexts. Research results show that if the reference object (DTQC) in the positioning reference system of the English preposition is assimilated with the speaker in Vietnamese [similar to the reference frame in the reference system] then, the translation semantics of the preposition “at, in, on” will be similar to the expression semantics of the corresponding units in Vietnamese. In contrast, the different structural semantics are manifested because there is no similarity in the frame of reference.

PublicationThe Effects of Collaborative Writing on Students’ Writing Fluency: An Efficient Framework for Collaborative Writing( 2021)Vu Phi Ho PhamCollaborative writing is widely researched for its effects on students’ writing accuracy; however, previous research studies fail to prove its effects on students’ writing fluency. Also, none of the previous studies have investigated the framework for students to compose argumentative essays collaboratively. The purpose of this article is to fill these gaps. Sixty-two sophomore English-major students at a university in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, participated in the study. One difference in the treatment between the two groups was the composing stage. Twenty-seven students from the control group composed essays individually after they worked together for idea development to make an outline, whereas 35 students from the experimental group composed essays collaboratively. Data collection was from students’ pretests, posttests of both individually and collaboratively written papers, and from the semi-structured interviews. The study reveals that collaborative writing had great effects on students’ writing fluency in both collaboratively written papers and individually written papers. Also, the study invented an efficient framework for collaborative writing activities so that writing instructors could employ to their writing classrooms if they wish to.

PublicationBoosting English Majors’ Ability in Pronouncing Stressed Vowels via Blue Canoe, a Mobile based Application: A Focus on Vietnamese EFL Learners( 2021)
;Nguyễn Huy Cường ;Nguyễn Thị HàLê Quang ThảoThere is no doubt that teaching and learning English pronunciation is one of the major concerns facing EFL/ESL educators and experts. Specifically, stressed vowel practice instruction has been considered a massive challenge among Vietnamese teachers because these two languages possess certain distinctive features in phonetics. This new digital age indicates that mobile-based applications have actively promoted EFL/ESL learners’ sound production. Thus, this paper pinpointed how digital apps affected learning vowels among English learners and discussed their attitudes towards the apps with the help of 32 first-year students majoring in English at Van Lang University, Ho Chi Minh City. A pre-test and post-test were used to see if there was a significant distinction in the participants’ ability to acquire vowel sounds. In addition, a five-point Likert scale questionnaire was employed to test how content they were when they used the app. The results show that with mean scores of 6.88 and 11.177 in the pre-test and post-test, respectively, students in the experimental group improved than their counterparts in the other group (M=6.0 in the pre-test and 8.47 in the post-test). Hence, an explanation for the better performance in the intervened group is that the participants practiced pronouncing vowels with the application Blue Canoe during the course. In addition, these participants also had a favorable attitude towards the mobile-based application in their phonetics class, with a mean score of 3.96 on the questionnaire -

PublicationAssessing the quality of e-learning teaching by lecturers at universities in Vietnam( 2021)Nguyễn Hữu NăngWith the growing popularity of the internet and the continued growth, universities are focusing more on web-based strategies to deliver higher education (e.g., e-learning). Despite this, very little research on e-learning service quality has been done to test the effectiveness of these efforts. Therefore, we researched two hundred-ten teachers, including 111 men and 99 women, who participated and used the quality of e-learning teaching questionnaires at several Vietnamese universities. In addition, we use the t-test and MANOVA test to assess each gender and experience group of the lecture. The results found that regarding the quality of e-learning teaching questionnaires scores, men were found to have higher scores than women. However, the teachers who had gone under the study showed a positive attitude to E-learning quality through lectures, and they would be interested in performing E-learning. Evaluating the quality of e-learning teaching is possible and well received by the lecturers. In addition, the assessment of quality learning helps to improve the system of e-learning at Vietnamese universities
