PublicationNovel Velocity Update Applied for IMU-based Wearable Device to Estimate the Vertical Distance( 2019)
;Tri Nhut DoU-Xuan TanThe demand for indoor localization that does not rely on the presence of any external infrastructure had been increasing. In general, an indoor localization system was required to be precise, highly accurate and reliable. In this paper, we presented and analyzed an indoor localization wearable device that was capable of positioning people while riding in an elevator. The inertial measurement unit (IMU) was utilized with an embedded system on the device. Current approaches involving IMU mounted on a pedestrian's body generally estimated the displacement on the ground only (in two dimensions). Thinking of a wearable device to estimate the vertical distance for elevator riding and with the fact that there are different levels of height for different buildings, a new algorithm was proposed to estimate distance in vertical direction when people riding in an elevator. The proposed algorithm was based on the double integrating process from global acceleration with gravity removal in which the velocity and distance are updated in periods that the vertical acceleration oscillates around Zero level. Experiments with a wearable device which was designed based on the IMU model MPU9150, Arduino board and wireless Xbee took place for riding in an elevator. Experimental results contained device's attitude, vertical distance and time stamp. They were recorded online wirelessly via Xbee devices into an *txt file. Experiments in this work include riding up and down in an elevator. They were repeated to collect data for evaluation by root mean square error (RMSE) computation based on the ground-truth. The experimental results demonstrated RMSE of 0.77%, 0.88%, 1.66% riding in an elevator through one floor only, riding in an elevator through multiple floors while stopping at each floor, riding in an elevator through 40 floors, respectively. -
PublicationNonlinear Inelastic Analysis for Steel Frames( 2020)Nguyễn Trần TrungThe manuscript shows a second-order inelastic analysis procedure for steel framed structures under static and seismic forces. Nonlinear inelastic finite element formulations are established utilized Stability Functions (SF) solved from exact solutions of second-order differential equations of beam-column finite element subjected to moments and axial forces. Stability functions help optimize modeling and computational time because only one element per member is used for beams or columns. Plasticity of steel can be modeled by two approaches: the plastic hinge (PH) and plastic fiber (PF). Generalized Displacement Control (GDC) algorithm is adopted for solving equilibrium equations for static problems, while the Newmark method and Newton-Raphson iterative algorithm are adopted aim for solving dynamic equilibrium equations. A verification example is shown to prove the computational efficiency, accuracy, and prove the convenience of the program for engineering analysis and design.

PublicationHanoi Old Quarter with Its Historic Tube House Transition in the Vietnam Context( 2020)Ngô Minh HùngThe Old Quarter is a place combining vestiges of its history and architecture with the traditional urban fabric to make this area more unique in Vietnam. Historically, the area has been definitely a part of Hanoi city since the tenth century and existed until present. The total area is about 82 ha, which contain many individual assets, buildings, tube-houses, other cultural structures and layers. It also faces phenomenon to concretize the buildings and the built heritage environment. This paper aims to share a different view of the heritage environment of Hanoi Old Quarter (HOQ) and its surrounding blocks. Based on research findings, it shows there are three developmental forms, such as: 4 side-directions, 3 side-direction and a single direction, which made unique typology of the blocks at present. Therefore, understanding the local community’s behavior within the blocks is one fundamental condition for managing future change of HOQ’s built heritage effectively and efficiently in the Vietnam context.

PublicationImproving pronunciation of freshmen through Moodle based activities( 2020)Nguyễn Thị Yến NhungGood pronunciation enhances both the intelligibility and the effectiveness of speech, so how to teach pronunciation has received great attention from teachers and researchers. Among a wide variety of methods, Moodle has emerged as an efficiently potential tool to assist students in acquiring an intelligible pronunciation. Pronunciation courses can be built on a Moodle site where teachers upload and share the designed materials with their students. Despite various advantages of Moodle courses, not many studies offered empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of Moodle projects on improving students’ pronunciation in Vietnam’s English as Foreign Language (EFL) context. Therefore, this study aimed to find out how using Moodle-based activity can improve freshmen’s pronunciation. The project consisted of 62 Van Lang University freshmen (Vietnam), who were organized into two different groups: the control group and the experimental group. Mixed method was used in combination with various tools for data collection such as pre- and post-test, questionnaire and semi-structured interview. The data collected showed that there was a sharp improvement in the experimental group’s pronunciation. In the hope of bettering students’ pronunciation, some suggestions for optimizing Moodle-based activities are also mentioned at the end of this research paper.

PublicationConstructive Alignment in Teaching English at Tertiary Level: An Insight into an Aun Designed Course( 2020)Nguyễn Thanh MinhIn recent years, the issue of improving teaching and learning quality in higher education has received many concerns from the stakeholders. An example of this phenomenon is the trend of registering for different kinds of quality accreditation, such as National Standard Accreditation, and the Asian University Network Quality Assurance. Following up this trend, constructive alignment has arisen as an effective tool as well as a “must” in the process of quality assurance. This study aims at taking a look at a course designed under the format of Asian University Network Quality Assurance – Speaking class for English majors. To address this issue, a small-scale qualitative case study is conducted within 10 weeks in order to answer the question of whether constructive alignment exists in the real classroom situation. A class of 30 students and their lecturer are involved in the study. After analyzing the data from both classroom observations and interviews, the researcher finds that constructive alignment is not fully implemented in the classroom. Specifically, there are some misalignments between intended learning outcomes and teaching and learning activities and assessment tasks, negatively affecting the implementation.
