PublicationA Critical View of Tube-House Architecture on Urban Type in Vietnam( 2021)Ngo Minh HungHanoi is the largest city in Vietnam. It is a political and socio-economic center, where attracting planners’ and environmentalist’s interests. Nowadays, Hanoi has been facing problems of rapid urbanization like many major cities in developing countries. Major commercial activity and pressure occur on almost all streets of the Ancient Quarter and causing local housing issues in a different socio-economic context. This paper aims to provide a deep view of housing issues and tube-house heritage in Vietnam referenced shop-houses in Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, respectively. The research used methods collecting primary data (observation, purposeful discussion) and secondary data to clarify factors, which are related to tube-house in the Quarter. It also presents the findings of such developmental history of tube-house, its typical structure, composition, and construction method as considerably important foundations for conservation activities. To enhance conservation strategy and improve “spirit” protection of Ancient Quarter for a better living environment to the year 2025, a framework for tube-house preservation covering “Inside-to-Outside” approach is proposed accordingly.

PublicationA model of reforming Institutional Structure to manage Open-Space in Hanoi City, Vietnam( 2021)N M HungA new Hanoi city had been expanded over 3,300km2, which merged the old Hanoi with Ha Tay province and parts of Vinh Phuc and Hoa Binh provinces from August 1, 2008. After more than 10 emerge years, the population in the new city has gone up to over 8,05 million people in 2020. Improving urban living environment is one of the important targets for the new Hanoi, and managing open-space (m-OS) is a key element in achieving this goal. M-OS is a crucial issue since the expansion and re-zoning of the city can increase the rate of urbanization, cause disappearance of open-space and lead to a serious deterioration of living conditions. Administratively, institutions need to be reformed to effectively manage open spaces in the expanded Hanoi and there is a need to implement specific strategies to manage these areas. This paper aims to provide a solution in managing open-spaces. A managerial model consists of regulatory simplification and adjustment, decentralization of decision-making and simplification of open-space management process. Lastly, proposing an active plan is necessary to implement such strategies successfully and ensure effective and efficient management of open-space and community participation for a mega- Hanoi.

PublicationAn Identity Framework and Design of a Historical City in Vietnam( 2021)
;Nguyen Dac ThaiYounghwan Pan"Objective: This study aims to investigate the attributing factors influencing major identity design for the historical city and making a design case with the factors. Background: Design historical city identity has a wide range of research areas. Diversity of research topic is one of the major strong points of this discipline, especially city branding. Dominant areas among diversity changed from time to time. It is interesting to study the design identity of the historical city of the dominant areas. Nowadays, the challenge for cities to thrive is to compete globally and make a clear difference. In that sense, small developing cities are particularly threatened, their distinctive values blurred by modernization. Method: Research the combination of the city’s specific values and characteristics with the tangible and intangible heritage values in the heritage city branding process. Heritage promotion is also very important in branding, building the city’s image based on the morphological and structural values of heritage buildings. Based on several heritage value methodologies, the paper examines these factors’ potential role in branding a historical city. Results: City branding has proven its ability to deliver strategic growth opportunities and attract investment. This article examines the role of identity and the ability to exploit heritage building values in Hue’s heritage city’s branding process. Conclusion: Branding a heritage city is a lifelong process based on defined strategic goals and programs to replicate, plan, and executed by the government. Application: The results of publishing trends analysis can help determine identity methods for many historical cities in Vietnam." -
PublicationCommunity-based behaviour towards Affordances in Conservation of Hanoi Old Quarter in the Vietnam context( 2020)Ngo Minh HungThe 36 Old Street Quarter is a downtown area of Hanoi City, which has over 1000 years old and contains such traces of history and architecture. The grid structure gives it a significant character that is a part of the local heritage facing phenomenon of replacing settings of ancient spaces, stoning the streets and concretizing old buildings due to anti-conservative interplay from its users. Therefore, this paper examines the user’s behaviour in optimizing different settings of Hanoi Old Quarter (HOQ) towards conservation efforts. Theoretically, the research was conducted by making use of ‘affordances’ terminology of Gibson (1986/1979) to understand interactions between the spatial settings and its user. Methodologically, the purposeful method of local people and layout-based sketch of the blocks, and analysed images of outdoor and shared places have been employed for three survey sites respectively. The results of community-based behaviours, its patterns and ‘verb-ability’ are fundamental factor to develop ground-up programs on urban and architectural conservation in the Vietnam’s contextualisation

PublicationDiscovery & Perceptions of Champa: the Đồng Dương Complex of Quảng Nam Province, Vietnam( 2021)
;Ngo Minh Hung ;William B. NoseworthyQuang Van SonTypical scholarly portrayals of the Đồng Dương site refer to a “Buddhist Monastery” of the classical Champā civilization, found in present-day Vietnam. French Orientalist research has strongly shaped scholarly focus on the monastery itself for the past century, informing the most recent English language scholarly production. However, more recent Vietnamese scholarship has begun to revise this portrayal, although most publications are archaeological reports for field experts and thus do not give a holistic understanding of Đồng Dương’s total archaeological footprint within a broader historical context. We bring English, French, and Vietnamese scholarship together in our analysis with field research and knowledge gleaned from indigenous Cham community members. We examine watchtowers, a citadel, relations with nearby ports, religious sites, a production site, and funerary sites while also noting challenges for ongoing research and providing recommendations for preserving the site in our conclusion. -
PublicationGis-based simulation for solar farm site selection in south-central Vietnam( 2021)
;Dinh-Thanh Nguyen ;Minh-Hoang TruongDiem-Trinh PhanThis research aims to develop a GIS-based simulation for choosing the best location for a solar farm in Binh Thuan province, which is in the low, hilly-mountainous region of South-Central Vietnam. Four groups of criteria (climate, location, land use, and orography), which include eight criteria (solar radiation, land surface temperature; distance to substation, main road, residential area, historical and tourism sites; land use; and slope) are considered for the site selection. Moreover, these criteria are divided into twenty-four sub-criteria which indicate the advantages and disadvantages of each criterion. A method of analytic hierarchy process, then, is applied to determine the relative weight of each group, criterion, and sub-criterion. -

PublicationMapping Interflow Potential and the Validation of Index-Overlay Weightings by Using Coupled Surface Water and Groundwater Flow Model( 2021)
;Chuen-Fa Ni ;Quoc-Dung Tran ;I-Hsien Lee ;Minh-Hoang TruongShaohua Marko HsuInterflow is an important water source contributing to river flow. It directly influences the near-surface water cycles for water resource management. This study focuses on assessing the interflow potential and quantifying the interflow in the downstream area along the Kaoping River in southern Taiwan. The interflow potential is first determined based on the modified index-overlay model, which employs the analytical hierarchy process (AHP) to calculate the ratings and weightings of the selected factors. The groundwater and surface water flow (GSFLOW) numerical model is then used to link the index-overlay model to quantify the interflow potential for practical applications. This study uses the Monte Carlo simulations to assess the influence of rainfall-induced variations on the interflow uncertainty in the study area. Results show that the high potential interflow zones are located in the high to middle elevation regions along the Kaoping River. Numerical simulations of the GSFLOW model show an interflow variation pattern that is similar to the interflow potential results obtained from the index-overlay model. The average interflow rates are approximately 3.5 × 104 (m3/d) in the high elevation zones and 2.0 × 104 (m3/d) near the coastal zones. The rainfall uncertainty strongly influences interflow rates in the wet seasons, especially the peaks of the storms or heavy rainfall events. Interflow rates are relatively stable in the dry seasons, indicating that interflow is a reliable water resource in the study area. -
PublicationNot just a monastery: The Đông Duong Complex of Vietnam( 2021)
;Q V SonW B NoseworthyIn this article we provide a critical re-examination of the sites associated with the “Đông Dương Buddhist Monastery” of the Champā civilization in Quảng Nam province, Vietnam. We argue this re-examination is needed because contemporary understandings are based on research that is more than 100 years old. While Vietnamese language research has progressed, until now, no English language publication has provided an update on the Đông Dương complex sites, including watchtowers, a citadel, relations with nearby ports, religious sites, a production site, and funerary sites, all associated with the Indrapura polity of Champā. -
PublicationThe Monumental Architecture of Po Ramé in Ninh Thuan Province, Vietnam( 2020)
