PublicationAlgebraically Determined Rings of Functions( 1900)McLinden, Alexander PatrickLet R be any of the following rings: the smooth functions on R^2n with the Poisson bracket, the Hamiltonian vector fields on a symplectic manifold, the Lie algebra of smooth complex vector fields on C, or a variety of rings of functions (real or complex valued) over 2nd countable spaces. Then if H is any other Polish ring and φ:H →R is an algebraic isomorphism, then it is also a topological isomorphism (i.e. a homeomorphism). Moreover, many such isomorphisms between function rings induce a homeomorphism of the underlying spaces. It is also shown that there is no topology in which the ring of real analytic functions on R is a Polish ring.

PublicationConformal Einstein spaces and Bach tensor generalization in n dimensions( 2004)Bergman Ärlebäck, JonasIn this thesis we investigate necessary and su±cient conditions for an n-dimensional space, n ≥ 4, to be locally conformal to an Einstein space. After reviewing the classical results derived in tensors we consider the four-dimensional spinor result of Kozameh, Newman and Tod. The involvement of the four-dimensional Bach tensor (which is divergence-free and conformally well-behaved) in their result motivates a search for an n-dimensional generalization of the Bach tensor Bab with the same properties. We strengthen a theorem due to Belfagón and Jaén and give a basis (Uab, V ab and Wab) for all n-dimensional symmetric, divergence-free 2-index tensors quadratic in the Riemann curvature tensor. We discover the simple relationship Bab = 1/2Uab + 1/6V ab and show that the Bach tensor is the unique tensor with these properties in four dimensions. Unfortunately we have to conclude, in general that there is no direct analogue in higher dimension with all these properties. Nevertheless, we are able to generalize the our-dimensional results due to Kozameh, Newman and Tod to n dimensions. We show that a generic space is conformal to an Einstein space if and only if there exists a vector field satisfying two conditions. The explicit use of dimensionally dependent identities (some of which are newly derived in this thesis) is also exploited in order to make the two conditions as simple as possible; explicit examples are given in five and six dimensions using these tensor identities. For n dimensions, we define the tensors babc and Bab, and we show that their vanishing is a conformal invariant property which guarantees that the space with non-degenerate Weyl tensor is a conformal Einstein space.

PublicationControl Strategy for Energy Efficient Fluid Power Actuators : Utilizing Individual Metering( 2007)Eriksson, BjörnThis thesis presents a solution enabling lower losses in hydraulic actuator systems. A mobile fluid power system often contains several different actuators supplied with a single load sensing pump. One of the main advantages is the need of only one system pump. This makes the fluid power system compact and cost-effective. A hydraulic load often consists of two ports, e.g. motors and cylinders. Such loads have traditionally been controlled by a valve that controls these ports by one single control signal, namely the position of the spool in a control valve. In this kind of valve, the inlet (meter-in) and outlet (meter-out) orifices are mechanically connected. The mechanical connection makes the system robust and easy to control, at the same time as the system lacks flexibility. Some of the main drawbacks are The fixed relation between the inlet and outlet orifices in most applications produce too much throttling at the outlet orifice under most operating conditions. This makes the system inefficient. The flow directions are fixed for a given spool position; therefore, no energy recuperation and/or regeneration ability is available. In this thesis a novel system idea enabling, for example, recuperation and regeneration is presented. Recuperation is when flow is taken from a tank, pressurized by external loads, and then fed back into the pump line. Regeneration is when either cylinder chambers (or motor ports) are connected to the pump line. Only one system pump is needed. Pressure compensated (load independent), bidirectional, poppet valves are proposed and utilized. The novel system presented in this thesis needs only a position sensor on each compensator spool. This simple sensor is also suitable for identification of mode switches, e.g. between normal, differential and regenerative modes. Patent pending. The balance of where to put the functionality (hardware and/or software) makes it possible to manoeuvre the system with maintained speed control in the case of sensor failure. The main reason is that the novel system does not need pressure transducers for flow determination. Some features of the novel system: Mode switches The mode switches are accomplished without knowledge about the pressures in the system Throttle losses With the new system approach, choice of control and measure signals, the throttle losses at the control valves are reduced Smooth mode switches The system will switch to regenerative mode automatically in a smooth manner when possible Use energy stored in the loads The load, e.g. a cylinder, is able to be used as a motor when possible, enabling the system to recuperate overrun loads The system and its components are described together with the control algorithms that enable energy efficient operation. Measurements from a real application are also presented in the thesis.

PublicationCycles of voles, predators, and alternative prey in boreal Sweden( 1991)Hörnfeldt, BirgerBank voles, grey-sided voles, and field voles had synchronous 3-4 year density cycles with variable amplitudes which averaged about 200-fold in each species. Cycles of vole predators (red fox and Tengmalm's owl), and their (foxes') alternative prey (mountain hare and forest grouse) lagged behind the vole cycles. The nomadic Tengmalm's owl responded with a very rapid and strong numerical increase to the initial cyclic summer increase of voles (the owl’s staple food). Owl breeding densities in the springs were highly correlated with vole supply in the previous autumns. This suggested that the number of breeding owls was largely determined in the autumn at the time of the owl's nomadic migrations, and that immigration was crucial for the rapid rise in owl numbers. The owl's numerical response was reinforced by the laying of earlier and larger clutches when food was plentiful. In addition, the owl has an early maturation at one year of age. The transition between subsequent vole cycles was characterized by a distinct shift in rate of change in numbers from low to high or markedly higher values in both summer and winter. Regulation increased progressively throughout the cycle since the rate of change decreased continuously in the summers. Moreover, there was a similar decrease of the rate of change in winter. Rate of change was delayed density-dependent. The delayed density-dependence had an 8 month time-lag in the summers and a 4 month time-lag in the winters relative to the density in previous autumns and springs, respectively. These findings suggest that vole cycles are likely to be generated by a time-lag mechanism. On theoretical grounds, it has been found that a delayed density- dependence of population growth rate with a 9 month time-lag caused stable limit cycles with a period between 3 and 4 years. Some mechanisms for the delayed density-dependence are suggested and discussed. The mechanisms are assumed to be related to remaining effects of vole populations past interactions with predators, food supplies, and/or diseases. Unlike the other voles, the bank vole had regular and distinct seasonal declines in density over winter. These declines are proposed to be due to predation, mainly by Tengmalm's owl. Supranivean foraging for epiphytic tree lichens and conifer seeds most likely explains why this species was frequently taken by the owl under snow-rich conditions. The alternative prey hypothesis predicts that a reduction of predator numbers should increase the number of alternative prey. Alternative prey should be less effectively synchronized to the vole cycle by predation at declining and low vole (main prey) densities; they may also lose their 3-4 year cyclicity. The appearance of sarcoptic mange among foxes in northern Sweden in the mid 1970s provided an opportunity to "test" these ideas, and these were found to be supported. In areas with highest mange infection rates, foxes declined markedly from the late 1970s to mid 1980s, whereas hare numbers rose rapidly and appeared non-cyclic.

PublicationElectron-Lattice Dynamics in pi-Conjugated Systems( 2007)Hultell (Andersson), MagnusIn this thesis we explore in particular the dynamics of a special type of quasi-particle in pi-conjugated materials termed polaron, the origin of which is intimately related to the strong interactions between the electronic and the vibrational degrees of freedom within these systems. In order to conduct such studies with the particular focus of each appended paper, we simultaneously solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation and the lattice equation of motion with a three-dimensional extension of the famous Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model Hamiltonian. In particular, we demonstrate in Paper I the applicability of the method to model transport dynamics in molecular crystals in a region were neither band theory nor perturbative treatments such as the Holstein model and extended Marcus theory apply. In Paper II we expand the model Hamiltonian to treat the revolution of phenylene rings around the sigma-bonds and demonstrate the great impact of stochastic ring torsion on the intra-chain mobility in conjugated polymers using poly[phenylene vinylene] (PPV) as a model system. Finally, in Paper III we go beyond the original purpose of the methodology and utilize its great flexibility to study radiationless relaxations of hot excitons

Após discutir um método de cálculo baseado numa expansão de altas temperaturas, formulamos uma teoria de perturbação otimizada empregando campos auxiliares via transformação de Hubbard-Stratonovich. Aproximações não perturbativas tradicionais de campo médio tipo Hartree-Fock e de BCS são obtidas em ordem zero da teoria de perturbação otimizada. Correções não perturbativas à aproximação de ordem zero são implementadas usando uma expansão em potências de uma interação modificada, em que os efeitos dos campos médios são subtraÃdos da interação original do Hamiltoniano da teoria / Abstract: The primary aim of the dissertation is to review the use of coherent states for the calculation of the grand canonical partition function for fermion Systems, without employing path integrals. After discussing a calculational method based on a high temperature expansion, we formulate an optimized perturbation theory employing external fields via the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation. Traditional non-perturbative mean field approximations like Hartree-Fock and BCS are obtained in zeroth order in the optimized perturbation theory. Non-perturbative corrections to the zeroth order approximation are implemented through a power series expansion of a modified interaction, where the effects of the mean fields are subtracted from the original interaction of the Hamiltonian of the theory / Mestre

PublicationFully bio-based epoxy resins( 1987)Ertl, Johanna"Epoxy resins are mainly produced by reacting bisphenol A with epichlorohydrin. Growing concerns about the negative health effects of bisphenol A are urging researchers to find alternatives. In this work diphenolic acid is suggested, as it derives from levulinic acid, obtained from renewable resources. Nevertheless, it is also synthesized from phenol, from fossil resources, which, in the current paper has been substituted by plant-based phenols. Two interesting derivatives were identified: diphenolic acid from catechol and from resorcinol. Epichlorohydrin on the other hand, is highly carcinogenic and volatile, leading to a tremendous risk of exposure. Thus, two approaches have been investigated and compared with epichlorohydrin. The resulting resins have been characterized to find an appropriate application, as epoxy are commonly used for a wide range of products, ranging from composite materials for boats to films for food cans. Self-curing capacity was observed for the resin deriving from diphenolic acid from catechol. The glycidyl ether of the diphenolic acid from resorcinol, a fully renewable compound, was cured in isothermal and non-isothermal tests tracked by DSC. Two aliphatic amines were used, namely 1,4-butanediamine and 1,6-hexamethylendiamine, in order to determine the effect of chain length on the curing of an epoxy-amine system and determine the kinetic parameters. The latter are crucial to plan any industrial application. Both diamines demonstrated superior properties compared to traditional bisphenol A-amine systems."

PublicationImage Based Visualization Methods for Meteorological Data( 2004)Olsson, BjörnVisualization is the process of constructing methods, which are able to synthesize interesting and informative images from data sets, to simplify the process of interpreting the data. In this thesis a new approach to construct meteorological visualization methods using neural network technology is described. The methods are trained with examples instead of explicitely designing the appearance of the visualization. This approach is exemplified using two applications. In the fist the problem to compute an image of the sky for dynamic weather, that is taking account of the current weather state, is addressed. It is a complicated problem to tie the appearance of the sky to a weather state. The method is trained with weather data sets and images of the sky to be able to synthesize a sky image for arbitrary weather conditions. The method has been trained with various kinds of weather and images data. The results show that this is a possible method to construct weather visaualizations, but more work remains in characterizing the weather state and further refinement is required before the full potential of the method can be explored. This approach would make it possible to synthesize sky images of dynamic weather using a fast and efficient empirical method. In the second application the problem of computing synthetic satellite images form numerical forecast data sets is addressed. In this case a mode is trained with preclassified satellite images and forecast data sets to be able to synthesize a satellite image representing arbitrary conditions. The resulting method makes it possible to visualize data sets from numerical weather simulations using synthetic satellite images, but could also be the basis for algorithms based on a preliminary cloud classification.

PublicationMethods and Applications in Integer Programming : All-Integer Column Generation and Nurse Scheduling( 2008)Rönnberg, ElinaInteger programming can be used to provide solutionsto complex decision and planning problems occurring in a wide varietyof situations. Applying integer programming to a real life problembasically involves a first phase where a mathematical model isconstructed, and a second phase where the problem described by themodel is solved. While the nature of the challenges involved in therespective two phases differ, the strong relationship between theproperties of models, and which methods that are appropriate for theirsolution, links the two phases. This thesis constitutes of threepapers, of which the third one considers the modeling phase, while thefirst and second one consider the solution phase. Many applications of column generation yield master problems of setpartitioning type, and the first and second papers presentmethodologies for solving such problems. The characteristics of themethodologies presented are that all successively found solutions arefeasible and integral, where the retention of integrality is a majordistinction from other column generation methods presented in theliterature. The third paper concerns nurse scheduling and describes the results ofa pilot implementation of a scheduling tool at a Swedish nursing ward.This paper focuses on the practical aspects of modeling and thechallenges of providing a solution to a complex real life problem.

PublicationN-acétyltransférase lysosomale : organisation, fonctionnement et défauts moléculaires chez les patients atteints du syndrome de Sanfilippo type C( 1900)Feldhammer, MatthewL’acétylation des résidus de glucosamine terminaux par la N-acétyltransférase lysosomale (HGSNAT) est une étape essentielle de la dégradation catabolique de l’héparan sulfate. Des défauts dans cette réaction causent une maladie de surcharge lysosomale autosomale récessive rare : le désordre de Sanfilippo type C (SFC). À ce jour, 54 mutations ont été rapportées chez des patients SFC, incluant 13 mutations des sites d’épissage, 11 insertions et délétions, 8 mutations non-sens, 18 mutations faux-sens et 4 polymorphismes, avec différentes manifestations phénotypiques. Nous avons identifié 10 d’entre elles et effectué une étude exhaustive portant sur l’éventail des mutations SFC, leur distribution dans la population de patients, ainsi que leur impact potentiel sur la structure de la HGSNAT. Les erreurs d’épissage, les mutations non-sens, les insertions et les délétions devraient toutes entraîner un ARN non fonctionnel qui est rapidement dégradé par des mécanismes de contrôle qualité cellulaire. Les 4 polymorphismes identifiés sont des changements d'acides aminés qui ne modifient pas l'activité enzymatique, la glycosylation ou la localisation et n'ont donc pas de signification au niveau clinique. Au niveau des enzymes, les polymorphismes sont des changements d’acides aminés qui n’affectent pas la fonction, mais dans un contexte d’acides nucléiques ils peuvent être considérés comme des mutations faux-sens. Les dix-huit mutations faux-sens qui ont été exprimées ont produit des protéines inactives, en raison d'erreurs dans leur repliement. Ceci expliquerait donc la progression sévère de la maladie chez les personnes porteuses de ces mutations. Les protéines mutantes mal repliées sont anormalement glycosylées et conservées dans le réticulum endoplasmique. La thérapie par amélioration de l’activité enzymatique par des chaperonnes est une option thérapeutique potentielle, spécifiquement conçue pour exploiter l'activité enzymatique résiduelle de mutants mal repliés, afin d’éliminer les substrats stockés. Nous avons démontré que le traitement de plusieurs lignées de fibroblastes de patients SFC avec le chlorhydrate de glucosamine, un inhibiteur spécifique de la HGSNAT, a partiellement restauré l’activité de l'enzyme mutante, fournissant une preuve de l’utilité future de la thérapie par des chaperonnes dans le traitement de la maladie de SFC. / The acetylation of terminal glucosamine residues by lysosomal N-acetyltransferase (HGSNAT) is an essential part of the catabolic breakdown of heparan sulfate. Defects in this reaction result in the rare autosomal recessive lysosomal storage disorder Sanfilippo syndrome type C (SFC). To date 54 mutations in SFC patients have been reported including 13 splice-site mutations, 11 insertions and deletions, 8 nonsense, 18 missense and 4 polymorphisms, with different phenotypic manifestations. We have identified 10 of them and conducted a comprehensive review discussing the spectrum of Sanfilippo C mutations, their distribution within the patient population as well as how the mutations could potentially affect the structure of HGSNAT. Splicing errors, nonsense mutations, insertions and deletions were all predicted to result in non-functional RNA which is rapidly degraded by cellular quality control mechanisms. The 4 identified polymorphisms resulted in amino acid changes which did not affect the enzyme activity, glycosylation or targeting and were therefore not clinically significant. Polymorphisms, in the context of enzymes are amino acid changes not affecting function, but in the context of nucleic acids can still be considered as missense mutations. Eighteen missense mutations were expressed and shown be inactive due to errors in protein folding providing an explanation for the severe disease progression seen in individuals with these mutations. Misfolded mutants were abnormally glycosylated and retained in the endoplasmic reticulum. Enzyme enhancement/chaperone therapy is a potential treatment option specifically designed to exploit the residual enzyme activity of misfolded mutants in order to clear stored substrates. We demonstrated that treatment of several fibroblast lines of SFC patients with a specific inhibitor of HGSNAT; glucosamine-hydrochloride partially rescued mutant enzyme activity providing a proof of principle for the future use of chaperone therapeutics in the treatment of SFC.

PublicationOn the clinical use of digitalis : with reference to its prescription, maintenance therapy, intoxication and the patient's knowledge( 1983)Boman, KurtDigitalis in one of the most frequently prescribed drugs, especially to elderly people. The prescription of cardiac glucosides (1978) was studied by using statistics from Apoteksbolaget (the National CorporaÂtion of Swedish Pharmacies). There was a threefold difference in the sales of cardiac glucosides per 1000 inhabitants in the different primary care areas. Digoxin was prescribed to 90-98 per cent of the patients, with considerable variations in the dosages. Many other factors besides the cardio-vascular morbidity were likely to cause these differences. Maintenance digitalis therapy has lately been questioned. In a retroÂspective study, digitalis was discontinued in 141 geriatric patients without contraindications to digitalis withdrawal. Digoxin treatment seemed to be unnecessary in 108 patients (81 per cent), followed up two months after digoxin withdrawal. A long-term study (mean: 20,5 months) was carried out in these 108 patients. Digitalis therapy was reinstituted in 30 of 99 patients, equally distributed on the basis of clear, possible or uncertain indications. Significantly more patients (p< 0,001) with atrial fibrillation compared with sinus rhythm were restarted. A prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo- controlled study in 39 out of 66 geriatric patients confirmed the results of the retrospective study. During a two-month period 32 of 37 patients (86 per cent) managed without digitalis. Eighteen out of 66 patients (27 per cent) presented contraindications to digoxin withÂdrawal. Those who needed digitalis were restarted mainly during the first nonth (mean: 18 days) following digoxin withdrawal. Digitalis intoxication has been studied earlier, mainly in hospitalized patients. A clinical examination and ECG of a random sample of outÂpatients treated with digoxin shewed that about 5 per cent were certainly intoxicated and about 2 per cent suspected of being intoxiÂcated. Elderly patients are said to be more sensitive to digitalis. Eleven per cent of 66 geriatric patients were found, without doubt, to be digitalis intoxicated. The mean serum digoxin concentration was significantly higher in eight toxic patients compared with non-toxic patients, but 75 per cent of the toxic patients had serum digoxin conÂcentrations within or below therapeutic range. Five of these intoxiÂcated patients did not need maintenance digitalis therapy. A questionnaire of 361 patients in SkellefteÃ¥ and Uppsala revealed that about 45 per cent had taken digitalis for more than five years. Approximately 85 per cent took one tablet daily and stated compliance. About one fifth did not know why they were taking digoxin and about half of the patients were uncertain if they were improved, by digitalis therapy. Although digitalis intoxication is such an important clinical problem, some 55 per cent did not know about digitalis's side-effects and some 50 per cent stated that no or insufficient information had been given. Only 15 per cent were satisfied with the information they had received. A significant negative correlation between digoxin dosages and the age of the patients was found. /

PublicationParietal cell regeneration in rat gastric mucosal wounds : a quantitative light and electron microscopical study( 1982)Blom, HÃ¥kanThe aims of the study were to obtain a method with which it would be possible to produce standardized wounds in the gastric mucosa, and to follow the regeneration of the acid producing parietal cells in those lesions during different experimental conditions. Quantitative methods applied to light and electron microscopy were used. Wounds were cauterized in the corpus mucosa in Sprague-Dawley rats and in addition, pyloroplasty, truncal vagotomy with pyloroplasty or ant- rectoiriy were performed. Other groups of rats with wounds were given long-term treatment with pentagastrin or cimetidine. Stimulation tests were carried out in two groups of wound operated rats. After different periods of time the animals were perfusion fixed and specimens from the wounds and normal mucosa beside the wounds were preÂpared for light and electron microscopy. By means of stereological techniques, different mucosal and cellular structures were then measurÂed. Parietal cells were found in 90 days old wounds. At this stage they were immature with large nuclei and few specialized cell organelles. In spite of this appearance they were able to respond morphologically to stimulation and to secrete acid. With further healing the morphology of the parietal cells became normal, but their volume fraction in the mucosa remained subnormal. The fraction of mucosa occupied by epithelÂial cells also stayed lower than normal. Pyloroplasty resulted in decreased cell and nuclear size of both normal and regenerating parietal cells. In the latter, there was also a deÂcrease in the mitochondrial volume density. If a truncal vagotomy was added to the pyloroplasty these changes disappeared and, in addition, an increase in parietal cell volume density was noticed in the normal mucosa. Antrectorny produced smaller parietal cells, and their maturation was delayed. Furthermore, mucosal thickness decreased. If pentagastrin was given to rats with wounds an increase in the number of parietal cells was noted, but maturation and morphology remained unaffected. Cimetidine treatment did not affect the parietal cell volume density in wounds or normal mucosa. However, a large increase in the secretory surface density was noticed when the effect of the last dose had ceasÂed. /

PublicationPeripheral Hypoglycaemic Neuropathy in Type 1 Diabetic Rats : Morphologic and Metabolic Studies( 2006)Jamali, RezaHyperglycaemia caused by insulin deficiency is believed to play a major role in the de-velopment of neuropathy in diabetic patients. The clinical and pathological features of diabetic neuropathy vary considerably, although sensory and autonomic dysfunctions are the most common characteristics. Normalisation of the blood glucose level by ef-fective insulin treatment decreases the incidence of diabetic neuropathy in patients. However, intensive insulin therapy may result in more frequent hypoglycaemic epi-sodes than are provoked by less ambitious diabetes control. Neuropathy might also be induced by severe hypoglycaemia in diabetes or insulinoma. Accordingly, it seems that the diversity in clinical symptoms of diabetic neuropathy may be due to the combined effects of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. Based on that assumption, the general aim of this project was to study the relationship between severe hypoglycaemia and pe-ripheral neuropathy in diabetic rats. To understand how the development of neuropathy is related to glycaemic control, we needed to be aware of the glucose dynamics in the animal model that we used. The aim was to ascertain whether the diabetic rats were similar to type 1 diabetic patients with regard to such dynamics. To achieve that goal, we used a MiniMed continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS®) to measure sub-cutaneous glucose in freely moving rats over a period of 72 hours. The glucose monitor worked well, and it showed that the insulin-treated diabetic BB/Wor rats with a hyper-glycaemic insulin regimen have a glycaemic status similar to that of type 1 diabetic patients with poor glycaemic control. The diabetic rats with a hypoglycaemic regimen generally had low blood glucose levels. Prolonged hypoglycaemia led to axonal de- and regeneration of large myelinated fibres in vagus nerve destined to the laryngeal muscle. Axonal de- and regeneration was also observed in the gastrocnemius and sural nerves, although the frequency of degeneration was much lower in the sural nerve. Small myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibres were normal in these nerves. These results suggest that hypoglycaemia preferentially damages muscle-related nerve fibres. In contrast, in the diabetic rats exposed to pro-longed hyperglycaemia, only the sural nerve exhibited decreased myelinated fibre diameter in the absence of obvious axonal degeneration. In situ glucose measurements by microdialysis showed that the glucose concentrations in blood and subcutaneous tissue were similar in healthy, diabetic hyperglycaemic, and diabetic hypoglycaemic rats. In the healthy and hyperglycaemic animals, the lowest glucose level was found in the peripheral nerve. Moreover, in controls, the glucose level was lower in muscle than in blood. In hypoglycaemic rats, there were no signifi-cant differences in glucose concentrations between different tissues.

PublicationRobust design : Accounting for uncertainties in engineering( 2008)Lönn, DavidThis thesis concerns optimization of structures considering various uncertainties. The overall objective is to find methods to create solutions that are optimal both in the sense of handling the typical load case and minimising the variability of the response, i.e. robust optimal designs. Traditionally optimized structures may show a tendency of being sensitive to small perturbations in the design or loading conditions, which of course are inevitable. To create robust designs, it is necessary to account for all conceivable variations (or at least the influencing ones) in the design process. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part serves as a theoretical background to the second part, the two appended articles. This first part includes the concept of robust design, basic statistics, optimization theory and meta modelling. The first appended paper is an application of existing methods on a large industrial example problem. A sensitivity analysis is performed on a Scania truck cab subjected to impact loading in order to identify the most influencing variables on the crash responses. The second paper presents a new method that may be used in robust optimizations, that is, optimizations that account for variations and uncertainties. The method is demonstrated on both an analytical example and a Finite Element example of an aluminium extrusion subjected to axial crushing. / ROBDES

PublicationVariational Calculations of Positronium Scattering with Hydrogen( 1900)Woods, DentonPositronium-hydrogen (Ps-H) scattering is of interest, as it is a fundamental four-body Coulomb problem. We have investigated low-energy Ps-H scattering below the Ps(n=2) excitation threshold using the Kohn variational method and variants of the method with a trial wavefunction that includes highly correlated Hylleraas-type short-range terms. We give an elegant formalism that combines all Kohn-type variational methods into a single form. Along with this, we have also developed a general formalism for Kohn-type matrix elements that allows us to evaluate arbitrary partial waves with a single codebase. Computational strategies we have developed and use in this work will also be discussed.With these methods, we have computed phase shifts for the first six partial waves for both the singlet and triplet states. The 1S and 1P phase shifts are highly accurate results and could potentially be viewed as benchmark results. Resonance positions and widths for the 1S-, 1P-, 1D-, and 1F-waves have been calculated.We present elastic integrated, elastic differential, and momentum transfer cross sections using all six partial waves and note interesting features of each. We use multiple effective range theories, including several that explicitly take into account the long-range van der Waals interaction, to investigate scattering lengths for the 1,3S and 1,3P partial waves and effective ranges for the 1,3S-wave.
