PublicationUnderstanding first year university students' passivity via their attitudes and language behaviors towards answering questions in class( 2019)Trương Thị Như NgọcLearning styles and learning strategies play a key role in learners’ success and autonomy in language learning. However, the majority of research in this area is carried out in foreign context rather than locally. Thus, many false assumptions have been made about Asian learning styles in general and Vietnamese learners in particular, i.e. they are passive and group-oriented learners, and they tend to learn by rote and memorize knowledge. In an attempt to find out if Vietnamese first year university non-English majored learners are passive or active, the study investigates their attitudes and language behaviors towards answering questions in class. The major findings from valid questionnaires responded by 90 students from five different technology-grouped departments reveal that Vietnamese students are not passive at all and the reasons why they appear passive are related to their shyness and face-saving attitudes. No statistically significant association was found between students’ personality and their passivity in the classroom.

Students from the south region reported higher levels of self-efficacy beliefs than their classmates from the north and central regions in Vietnam. However, no significant differences were found between male and female students. PublicationWays of Learning English Pronunciation Among First Year English Majors at Van Lang University( 2019)Nguyễn Thị Triều ThảoPronunciation plays an important part in language learning and teaching. English is considered as a foreign language spoken by the most people in Vietnam. Students of native Vietnamese are thought to be influenced by their Vietnamese pronunciation, and this makes them pronounce English words inexactly. Though many studies about English pronunciation have been conducted recently to help improve the students’ English pronunciation, the implementation is still overlapping and unsuccessful. This article is an attempt using questionnaire to discover how first-year English majors learn English pronunciation at Van Lang University. Based on the research data, the findings of the study are believed to apply to the learning and teaching practice at Van Lang University and similar contexts.
