PublicationA Real Game-Changer in ESL Classroom? Boosting Vietnamese Learner Engagement with Gamification( 2020)Lê Thùy LinhThe significance of gamification has been robust in educational contexts as gamification provides a greater engagement and empowerment among ESL language learners. This research aims to reconsider the role of gamification beyond its conventional use as gamified classroom activities, incorporating it into the whole journey of an ESL blended learning course. The study was conducted in a Vietnamese private university with a total of 50 learners for 12 weeks. E-journal and interviews were employed to explore learners’ deep thoughts of gamification. Each week, five learners voluntarily submitted their journals through a link by Google Form. Additionally, interviews were also conducted in the middle of the course, week 7, and at the end of the course, week 12. Data was analyzed into 3 main themes: behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement. The result indicated that ESL learners achieved a deeper engagement in a gamified blended classroom, behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively. To be more specific, learners attained a higher level of participation, effort-making, and contribution to learning. Moreover, participants showed their interest and confirmed the decrease of language anxiety. Finally, students developed a sense of social connection and investment in their learning, which was regarded as the expressions of cognitive engagement.

PublicationAssessing the quality of e-learning teaching by lecturers at universities in Vietnam( 2021)Nguyễn Hữu NăngWith the growing popularity of the internet and the continued growth, universities are focusing more on web-based strategies to deliver higher education (e.g., e-learning). Despite this, very little research on e-learning service quality has been done to test the effectiveness of these efforts. Therefore, we researched two hundred-ten teachers, including 111 men and 99 women, who participated and used the quality of e-learning teaching questionnaires at several Vietnamese universities. In addition, we use the t-test and MANOVA test to assess each gender and experience group of the lecture. The results found that regarding the quality of e-learning teaching questionnaires scores, men were found to have higher scores than women. However, the teachers who had gone under the study showed a positive attitude to E-learning quality through lectures, and they would be interested in performing E-learning. Evaluating the quality of e-learning teaching is possible and well received by the lecturers. In addition, the assessment of quality learning helps to improve the system of e-learning at Vietnamese universities

PublicationBoosting English Majors’ Ability in Pronouncing Stressed Vowels via Blue Canoe, a Mobile based Application: A Focus on Vietnamese EFL Learners( 2021)
;Nguyễn Huy Cường ;Nguyễn Thị HàLê Quang ThảoThere is no doubt that teaching and learning English pronunciation is one of the major concerns facing EFL/ESL educators and experts. Specifically, stressed vowel practice instruction has been considered a massive challenge among Vietnamese teachers because these two languages possess certain distinctive features in phonetics. This new digital age indicates that mobile-based applications have actively promoted EFL/ESL learners’ sound production. Thus, this paper pinpointed how digital apps affected learning vowels among English learners and discussed their attitudes towards the apps with the help of 32 first-year students majoring in English at Van Lang University, Ho Chi Minh City. A pre-test and post-test were used to see if there was a significant distinction in the participants’ ability to acquire vowel sounds. In addition, a five-point Likert scale questionnaire was employed to test how content they were when they used the app. The results show that with mean scores of 6.88 and 11.177 in the pre-test and post-test, respectively, students in the experimental group improved than their counterparts in the other group (M=6.0 in the pre-test and 8.47 in the post-test). Hence, an explanation for the better performance in the intervened group is that the participants practiced pronouncing vowels with the application Blue Canoe during the course. In addition, these participants also had a favorable attitude towards the mobile-based application in their phonetics class, with a mean score of 3.96 on the questionnaire -
PublicationBringing LBC into Classroom: An Evaluation on Self-video Recorded Speaking Task Through Vietnamese Learner Perceptions( 2022)
;Phan Thi Cat TuongVu Phi Ho PhamRecently, thanks to the development of the Internet and other life conveniences, chances for learners to study language beyond the classroom have been expanded. Therefore, it is suggested that teachers link the world beyond the classroom (LBC) to their teaching and put their students' perceptions and experiences at the core of the teaching process. In this study, the teacher-practitioner assigned an out-of-class task in which students had to self-video record their speaking outside the classroom, but the products were then assessed in class. By using semi-structured interviews and learner reflective journals, the research draws significant evaluative findings of self-video recorded speaking task (SRST) through learner perceptions of its effectiveness and successful learning strategies. Another important finding is learner perspectives about the role of the teacher in SRST by providing input and giving feedback. Based on the findings, the study offers implications for both research and practice on SRST application within and beyond the Vietnamese context -

PublicationDeterminants in Student Satisfaction with Online Learning: A Survey Study of Second-Year Students at Private Universities in HCMC( 2021)
;Quang Hai TranThanh Minh NguyenDue to the development of technology and the outbreak of COVID-19, many higher education institutions have employed online learning as a measure to the urgent situation. However, the sudden shift to complete online learning has a considerable impact on students. Therefore, maintaining student satisfaction with their learning experience is a significant issue for the stakeholders. From scientific perspectives, many researchers propose the importance of identifying factors influencing student satisfaction. Although many studies are dealing with this issue, few have succeeded in identifying determinants in student satisfaction with online learning in which online learning is a part of the school ecosystem. This research aimed at tackling this problem in the context of private universities in Ho Chi Minh city. Notably, 317 students from two private universities were involved in this survey study. The data were collected via online questionnaires and analyzed by using the PLS-SEM approach to examine which factors found in the literature were more dominant. The research findings indicated three determinants, including course effectiveness, providing knowledge and skills, and the sense of belonging. This result suggested that in order to increase student satisfaction with online learning in the current situation, these three determinants should be paid more attention by the stakeholders. -

There are objective and subjective causes that come from students and schools. However, the essay will mainly focus on the difficulties from the student's perspective. The possible challenges teachers and students face in an online learning environment must be considered to ensure the student's success. Therefore, there are two roles in e-learning that must be considered when discussing ways to improve these challenges. The first is the role of the teacher, and the second, the role of the students (Le & Truong, 2021). -

PublicationGenre-based Approach to Writing in EFL Contexts( 2021)
;Vu Phi Ho PhamThi Kim Loan BuiWriting is a challenging and demanding skill for EFL learners in Vietnam. Teaching writing skills at Vietnamese universities is problematic since different approaches to writing have not been implemented effectively. Mainly, a genre-based approach to writing has not yet been implemented in EFL writing classrooms successfully. This paper investigates how the genre-based writing approach has been taught and learned at Van Lang University. The study mentions some critical notions of systemic functional linguistics, genre-based writing approach, and the importance and effects of genre-based approach to writing. 128 students turned in their midterm essays in week 5 of the 10-week writing course. These 128 expository essays were analyzed and synthesized using Microsoft Excel to calculate the differences in move-step structure. The findings indicated that the students had difficulty following the fixed move-step structure, and they also faced challenges of lexico-grammatical usage for the expository. Hence, the study suggests some implications for applying a genre-based approach to writing for EFL teachers and students and suggests further research. -
PublicationHelping Language Learners Self-Review Learning Points and Gain Learning Expectation( 2022)Dinh T.T. LeRevision after each lesson plays an essential role in enhancing learners' English level, although it is sometimes neglected by students at the tertiary education level. Acknowledging learners’ difficulty in reviewing major learning points and their low expectations in classes of writing skills, I decided to apply a technique called “summary cards” to assist students in grasping the main points and logically connect their lessons for the whole picture of the subject. The act also aims at helping review for the final exam when students have to deal with a huge amount of knowledge in order to meet the requirements. Furthermore, a small act of the “summary card” was utilized to assist students in setting their learning goals and gaining their expectations and motivation, which was supposed to help improve both their level of writing and their attitudes towards learning writing skills. After a 10-week course using ""summary cards,"" a class of 36 freshmen at a university showed positive attitudes towards the new measure introduced. It is possible in the future that they apply this new measure in other courses which require them to memorize various learning points.

PublicationImproving English Speaking Ability Through E Learning( 2021)
;Cao Thị Xuân Tú ;Sử Ái Anh Thư ;Lê Đỗ Lam Vy ;Nguyễn Lê Ngọc TrinhNguyễn Thị Lan AnhE-learning is an alternative approach to education, which mentions the utilization of information and transmission technologies to allow the way to online learning. Many previous studies have compared E-learning with face-to-face learning to determine the benefits and drawbacks of each method and see if they could substitute the other. However, few studies examined whether e-learning affects English as Foreign Language (EFL) in speaking skill; some were successful in investigating, but some were not. In order to fill this gap, this study demonstrates the effectiveness of e-learning in improving English speaking ability. The researchers used a random sampling method with twenty questionnaires and five questions to interview to achieve the goal. Participants were fifty junior students of the Faculty of Foreign Language who had two years of experience of studying speaking skills at Van Lang University (VLU) in Ho Chi Minh City. The procedure of collecting results lasted two weeks, and data collection was analyzed based on the results presented in the chart. These findings shed light on the difficult factor students encountered when speaking English and highlight development-speaking ability progression via E-learning -
PublicationLocative Prepositions “at, in, on” and Translation to Vietnamese Through Frameworks( 2021)THI TUYET HANH NGUYENBased on the role of the frame of reference under the influence of point-of-view culture in the British and Vietnamese ethnic groups used as a cognitive premise in the translation, the article presents the justification of the contracting process about the reasons, similarities and differences as well as the semantic differences of the locating preposition “at, in, on” in English with the corresponding linguistic units in Vietnamese through specific communication contexts. Research results show that if the reference object (DTQC) in the positioning reference system of the English preposition is assimilated with the speaker in Vietnamese [similar to the reference frame in the reference system] then, the translation semantics of the preposition “at, in, on” will be similar to the expression semantics of the corresponding units in Vietnamese. In contrast, the different structural semantics are manifested because there is no similarity in the frame of reference.
