PublicationFully bio-based epoxy resins( 1987)"Epoxy resins are mainly produced by reacting bisphenol A with epichlorohydrin. Growing concerns about the negative health effects of bisphenol A are urging researchers to find alternatives. In this work diphenolic acid is suggested, as it derives from levulinic acid, obtained from renewable resources. Nevertheless, it is also synthesized from phenol, from fossil resources, which, in the current paper has been substituted by plant-based phenols. Two interesting derivatives were identified: diphenolic acid from catechol and from resorcinol. Epichlorohydrin on the other hand, is highly carcinogenic and volatile, leading to a tremendous risk of exposure. Thus, two approaches have been investigated and compared with epichlorohydrin. The resulting resins have been characterized to find an appropriate application, as epoxy are commonly used for a wide range of products, ranging from composite materials for boats to films for food cans. Self-curing capacity was observed for the resin deriving from diphenolic acid from catechol. The glycidyl ether of the diphenolic acid from resorcinol, a fully renewable compound, was cured in isothermal and non-isothermal tests tracked by DSC. Two aliphatic amines were used, namely 1,4-butanediamine and 1,6-hexamethylendiamine, in order to determine the effect of chain length on the curing of an epoxy-amine system and determine the kinetic parameters. The latter are crucial to plan any industrial application. Both diamines demonstrated superior properties compared to traditional bisphenol A-amine systems."

PublicationCycles of voles, predators, and alternative prey in boreal Sweden( 1991)Bank voles, grey-sided voles, and field voles had synchronous 3-4 year density cycles with variable amplitudes which averaged about 200-fold in each species. Cycles of vole predators (red fox and Tengmalm's owl), and their (foxes') alternative prey (mountain hare and forest grouse) lagged behind the vole cycles. The nomadic Tengmalm's owl responded with a very rapid and strong numerical increase to the initial cyclic summer increase of voles (the owl’s staple food). Owl breeding densities in the springs were highly correlated with vole supply in the previous autumns. This suggested that the number of breeding owls was largely determined in the autumn at the time of the owl's nomadic migrations, and that immigration was crucial for the rapid rise in owl numbers. The owl's numerical response was reinforced by the laying of earlier and larger clutches when food was plentiful. In addition, the owl has an early maturation at one year of age. The transition between subsequent vole cycles was characterized by a distinct shift in rate of change in numbers from low to high or markedly higher values in both summer and winter. Regulation increased progressively throughout the cycle since the rate of change decreased continuously in the summers. Moreover, there was a similar decrease of the rate of change in winter. Rate of change was delayed density-dependent. The delayed density-dependence had an 8 month time-lag in the summers and a 4 month time-lag in the winters relative to the density in previous autumns and springs, respectively. These findings suggest that vole cycles are likely to be generated by a time-lag mechanism. On theoretical grounds, it has been found that a delayed density- dependence of population growth rate with a 9 month time-lag caused stable limit cycles with a period between 3 and 4 years. Some mechanisms for the delayed density-dependence are suggested and discussed. The mechanisms are assumed to be related to remaining effects of vole populations past interactions with predators, food supplies, and/or diseases. Unlike the other voles, the bank vole had regular and distinct seasonal declines in density over winter. These declines are proposed to be due to predation, mainly by Tengmalm's owl. Supranivean foraging for epiphytic tree lichens and conifer seeds most likely explains why this species was frequently taken by the owl under snow-rich conditions. The alternative prey hypothesis predicts that a reduction of predator numbers should increase the number of alternative prey. Alternative prey should be less effectively synchronized to the vole cycle by predation at declining and low vole (main prey) densities; they may also lose their 3-4 year cyclicity. The appearance of sarcoptic mange among foxes in northern Sweden in the mid 1970s provided an opportunity to "test" these ideas, and these were found to be supported. In areas with highest mange infection rates, foxes declined markedly from the late 1970s to mid 1980s, whereas hare numbers rose rapidly and appeared non-cyclic.

PublicationPeripheral Hypoglycaemic Neuropathy in Type 1 Diabetic Rats : Morphologic and Metabolic Studies( 2006)Hyperglycaemia caused by insulin deficiency is believed to play a major role in the de-velopment of neuropathy in diabetic patients. The clinical and pathological features of diabetic neuropathy vary considerably, although sensory and autonomic dysfunctions are the most common characteristics. Normalisation of the blood glucose level by ef-fective insulin treatment decreases the incidence of diabetic neuropathy in patients. However, intensive insulin therapy may result in more frequent hypoglycaemic epi-sodes than are provoked by less ambitious diabetes control. Neuropathy might also be induced by severe hypoglycaemia in diabetes or insulinoma. Accordingly, it seems that the diversity in clinical symptoms of diabetic neuropathy may be due to the combined effects of hyperglycaemia and hypoglycaemia. Based on that assumption, the general aim of this project was to study the relationship between severe hypoglycaemia and pe-ripheral neuropathy in diabetic rats. To understand how the development of neuropathy is related to glycaemic control, we needed to be aware of the glucose dynamics in the animal model that we used. The aim was to ascertain whether the diabetic rats were similar to type 1 diabetic patients with regard to such dynamics. To achieve that goal, we used a MiniMed continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS®) to measure sub-cutaneous glucose in freely moving rats over a period of 72 hours. The glucose monitor worked well, and it showed that the insulin-treated diabetic BB/Wor rats with a hyper-glycaemic insulin regimen have a glycaemic status similar to that of type 1 diabetic patients with poor glycaemic control. The diabetic rats with a hypoglycaemic regimen generally had low blood glucose levels. Prolonged hypoglycaemia led to axonal de- and regeneration of large myelinated fibres in vagus nerve destined to the laryngeal muscle. Axonal de- and regeneration was also observed in the gastrocnemius and sural nerves, although the frequency of degeneration was much lower in the sural nerve. Small myelinated and unmyelinated nerve fibres were normal in these nerves. These results suggest that hypoglycaemia preferentially damages muscle-related nerve fibres. In contrast, in the diabetic rats exposed to pro-longed hyperglycaemia, only the sural nerve exhibited decreased myelinated fibre diameter in the absence of obvious axonal degeneration. In situ glucose measurements by microdialysis showed that the glucose concentrations in blood and subcutaneous tissue were similar in healthy, diabetic hyperglycaemic, and diabetic hypoglycaemic rats. In the healthy and hyperglycaemic animals, the lowest glucose level was found in the peripheral nerve. Moreover, in controls, the glucose level was lower in muscle than in blood. In hypoglycaemic rats, there were no signifi-cant differences in glucose concentrations between different tissues.

PublicationOn the clinical use of digitalis : with reference to its prescription, maintenance therapy, intoxication and the patient's knowledge( 1983)Digitalis in one of the most frequently prescribed drugs, especially to elderly people. The prescription of cardiac glucosides (1978) was studied by using statistics from Apoteksbolaget (the National Corporation of Swedish Pharmacies). There was a threefold difference in the sales of cardiac glucosides per 1000 inhabitants in the different primary care areas. Digoxin was prescribed to 90-98 per cent of the patients, with considerable variations in the dosages. Many other factors besides the cardio-vascular morbidity were likely to cause these differences. Maintenance digitalis therapy has lately been questioned. In a retrospective study, digitalis was discontinued in 141 geriatric patients without contraindications to digitalis withdrawal. Digoxin treatment seemed to be unnecessary in 108 patients (81 per cent), followed up two months after digoxin withdrawal. A long-term study (mean: 20,5 months) was carried out in these 108 patients. Digitalis therapy was reinstituted in 30 of 99 patients, equally distributed on the basis of clear, possible or uncertain indications. Significantly more patients (p< 0,001) with atrial fibrillation compared with sinus rhythm were restarted. A prospective, randomized, double-blind placebo- controlled study in 39 out of 66 geriatric patients confirmed the results of the retrospective study. During a two-month period 32 of 37 patients (86 per cent) managed without digitalis. Eighteen out of 66 patients (27 per cent) presented contraindications to digoxin withdrawal. Those who needed digitalis were restarted mainly during the first nonth (mean: 18 days) following digoxin withdrawal. Digitalis intoxication has been studied earlier, mainly in hospitalized patients. A clinical examination and ECG of a random sample of outpatients treated with digoxin shewed that about 5 per cent were certainly intoxicated and about 2 per cent suspected of being intoxicated. Elderly patients are said to be more sensitive to digitalis. Eleven per cent of 66 geriatric patients were found, without doubt, to be digitalis intoxicated. The mean serum digoxin concentration was significantly higher in eight toxic patients compared with non-toxic patients, but 75 per cent of the toxic patients had serum digoxin concentrations within or below therapeutic range. Five of these intoxicated patients did not need maintenance digitalis therapy. A questionnaire of 361 patients in Skellefteå and Uppsala revealed that about 45 per cent had taken digitalis for more than five years. Approximately 85 per cent took one tablet daily and stated compliance. About one fifth did not know why they were taking digoxin and about half of the patients were uncertain if they were improved, by digitalis therapy. Although digitalis intoxication is such an important clinical problem, some 55 per cent did not know about digitalis's side-effects and some 50 per cent stated that no or insufficient information had been given. Only 15 per cent were satisfied with the information they had received. A significant negative correlation between digoxin dosages and the age of the patients was found. /

PublicationParietal cell regeneration in rat gastric mucosal wounds : a quantitative light and electron microscopical study( 1982)The aims of the study were to obtain a method with which it would be possible to produce standardized wounds in the gastric mucosa, and to follow the regeneration of the acid producing parietal cells in those lesions during different experimental conditions. Quantitative methods applied to light and electron microscopy were used. Wounds were cauterized in the corpus mucosa in Sprague-Dawley rats and in addition, pyloroplasty, truncal vagotomy with pyloroplasty or ant- rectoiriy were performed. Other groups of rats with wounds were given long-term treatment with pentagastrin or cimetidine. Stimulation tests were carried out in two groups of wound operated rats. After different periods of time the animals were perfusion fixed and specimens from the wounds and normal mucosa beside the wounds were prepared for light and electron microscopy. By means of stereological techniques, different mucosal and cellular structures were then measured. Parietal cells were found in 90 days old wounds. At this stage they were immature with large nuclei and few specialized cell organelles. In spite of this appearance they were able to respond morphologically to stimulation and to secrete acid. With further healing the morphology of the parietal cells became normal, but their volume fraction in the mucosa remained subnormal. The fraction of mucosa occupied by epithelial cells also stayed lower than normal. Pyloroplasty resulted in decreased cell and nuclear size of both normal and regenerating parietal cells. In the latter, there was also a decrease in the mitochondrial volume density. If a truncal vagotomy was added to the pyloroplasty these changes disappeared and, in addition, an increase in parietal cell volume density was noticed in the normal mucosa. Antrectorny produced smaller parietal cells, and their maturation was delayed. Furthermore, mucosal thickness decreased. If pentagastrin was given to rats with wounds an increase in the number of parietal cells was noted, but maturation and morphology remained unaffected. Cimetidine treatment did not affect the parietal cell volume density in wounds or normal mucosa. However, a large increase in the secretory surface density was noticed when the effect of the last dose had ceased. /
